I’ve been reading a lot of articles lately about that topic and it keeps coming down to the same point.
In order to increase productivity, you need to know where the time leaks are and eliminate them. If you are able to track your time and see what you’re doing and how you work, you can make changes.
However tracking time is not fun, and it’s easy to forget as you go about your tasks.
Here’s where technology can help.
Software and applications can streamline the process and even make it fun and challenging.
A while ago I wrote about the Pomodoro Technique, a way to get things done by working on a task for a specified time, then taking a break.
In case you missed it, the Pomodoro Technique helps you look at the time you have differently. Instead of thinking deadlines, you work with the time you have. Planned short breaks keep you on track, avoiding burnout. It’s easier to manage distractions by noting them for a time when you can address them instead of dropping what you’re in the middle of to take care of them. Because your efficiency increases your stress levels drop because you feel like you’re in control, and you can enjoy play time without guilt.
TeamViz has developed a nifty little app that makes it all pretty and useful.
The TeamViz app has you list your tasks, then move the ones you need to do today to Today’s Tasks. Once there, you can start a timer which gives you 25 minutes to work like crazy, then a 5 minute break.
So that’s great, but so far you could do the same with a kitchen timer.
The real magic is in the the tracking, and the ability to see a report of how productive you were. With this information you can create a work day that is more effective and one where you get more done in the same amount of time.
It also answers the question of “where did the time go?”
Did I mention it was free? There are also upgrade options.
